... reaching for the Son

I use to believe in a God who smiled occasionally, when I did something that made Him happy. Now I know a God who beams over me day and night, every second of my existence.

I haven't listened to your podcast, but I recently came across Quivering Daughters and read a little bit.
Thought it rather timely. Hmm... Very interesting. Worth some reflection for sure.
Once again, one cannot follow a recipe for parenting (or any relationship) and expect the results to come out the same as someone else who put in the indentical ingredients.

I've been mulling over this all day. Since I haven't read her book or entire blog, I comment with a little hesitancy. I certainly want to read her book as Patrick and I are struggling with/sorting through a lot of things in regard to women now that we have a daughter. What does scripture say about women's roles vs the World?

As someone who grew up in ministry I can relate to spiritual abuse or not being allowed to question something that those in leadership claim to be scriptual. I have NO DOUBT the abuses Hillary talks about are real and I am thankful she has given a voice to many women. I think the patriarchal abuse she is talking about is the Devil's most common scheme. Take something that is right and good like putting the husband/father as the head of the house and schew one's thinking about it JUST ENOUGH so that it ends up being a completely bastardized version of what God intends.

However, I do not agree with the postings that the husband/father is not a priest in his home. The writings I have read in regard to this (and I haven't read all) from those in the homeschool movement have clear scriptural support. I believe Patrick is a priest in our home in the sense that he is ultimately responsible for the spirituality of our home. I believe there are examples of this role throughout scripture.

Hillary and the gentleman's blog she links to seem to imply that teachers in the homeschool movement are saying fathers are intercessors for their wives and children to God, much like the Catholic church that doesn't think the "common man" can access God. I have no doubt there are men who take this view and use it to control women, but I haven't seen it to be what is actually being taught.

Patrick and I were talking about all this after I sent him the link to Hillary's blog and we agreed that it is good to read critiques. We are new to this whole homeschool, family-integrated-chruch, family discipleship thing and we know we need to take all matters to the Lord and weigh them against scripture. Stuff like this gives us good things to consider.
